On Saturday night, Slightly Stoopid brought its Everything is Awesome tour to the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. The line-up included fellow Southern California acts, Stick Figure and Dirty Heads. Stick Figure did a great job getting the crowd ready for the night. The band’s dog, Cocoa, sat toward the front of the stage for the duration of their performance and was a highlight of their set. Dirty Heads brought exuberance to the stage and had many members of the audience rapping along in unison to the first few songs of their set. After great performances by each band, it was time for Slightly Stoopid to take the stage. Shortly after 9pm, the red and white stage lights began to illuminate the aromatic haze that filled the air. The band, with instruments in hand, assumed its place on the stage and was ready to continue the chilled-out vibe the previous bands started.
Slightly Stoopid kicked things off with “Dabbington,” the first track off their new release, Meanwhile…Back at the Lab. This instrumental track has a memorable hip hop-type drumbeat and, thanks to Karl Denson and Daniel Delacruz, the infectious horn parts were stuck in my head till the following day. Guitarist, Miles Doughty, steadily churned out some melodic staccato rhythms with his twin humbucker, hardtail Fender Strat. A non-musical highlight for me was his Star Wars themed cabinet and shirt. Also, the artwork on the grille cloth was something very reminiscent of Empire Strikes Back. As I looked into the crowd I saw a sea of smiles and people really enjoying the moment and enjoying the band. It was easy to tell that Slightly Stoopid have a strong following based on the diverse groups celebrating this band’s music together. This band has been playing together since 1995 and brought a very tight-knit level of musicality to this historic venue on a warm Southern California night. On this night, everything was awesome
